Concentrating Solar Technologies for Process heat, Community cooking & Cooling Applications

Introduction:

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Govt. of India is promoting Concentrating Solar Technology based systems for process heat, community cooking and space cooling applications in various sectors.

For cooking of food in Hotels, Ashrams, Educational Institutions and steam generation for laundry application, space cooling, foods processing in industries, Concentrating Solar Technologies are in implementation for last many years. Few other technologies e.g. dual axis tracked paraboloid dishes, linear Fresnel reflectors, Non-imaging concentrators have also been developed recently and are in demonstration stage.

For promotion of Concentrating solar systems, 30% Central financial support for commercial organizations is available under off-grid scheme of JNSSM. Higher support of 60% is available in special category states for non commercial organizations. The systems are being installed through State Nodal Agencies /accredited private channel partners as per technical specifications laid down by MNRE. 15% support under UNDP programme is also admissible.

Concentrating Solar technology (CST):

  • CST is a device which can concentrate solar radiation using mirrors to produce temperatures in the range of 100 to 450 ̊ C or more.
  • These devices need tracking to focus Sun rays on to a receiver all the time.
  • They tap only direct normal radiation and not the diffused one.
  • These are very useful in medium and high temperature required for various applications .

Various CST technologies:

1)      For medium thermal temperature applications:

      a) Fixed focus Elliptical Solar Dish (Scheffler) up to 120 ̊ C.  

    b)Non-Imaging concentrator  up to 120 ̊ C .

2)  For medium and high thermal temperature applications:

     a) Parabolic trough concentrator(PTC) up to 250̊ C  

   b) Linear Fresnel reflector concentrator up to250̊ C  

   c) Paraboloid Dish up to350̊ C .  

   d) Fresnel reflector based Dish up to 350̊ C.
